Two new scores

Back from holiday last night to find two newly composed scores to learn for the Christmas period. Always an exciting moment.

One is Jonathan Palmer's Awake the Voice, for a premier in (actually, near) Portishead on 13th December. It's a choral work, for four soloists (me, Lotti Newstead, Pam Rudge and Ian Yemm), chorus and orchestra. It looks like a greatly accessible piece, and I'm looking forward to doing it alongside the Bach Magnificat.

The other is (most of) Mark Lawrence's new dramatic cantata Home By Christmas, which is being premiered in the week after Awake the Voice. It's a World War I piece, based around the Christmas carols, the famous Christmas Day football match and the story of a young man who gets sent to war. It's being premiered in the Colston Hall, with we hope a cast of hundreds, if not thousands. The chorus will be made up of young people from around the Bristol area, with young soloists and a couple of adults in other lead roles.

I'll be blogging much more about these two pieces in the next few months - sometimes here, sometimes in the Upcoming Performances section.
